For all we know their "close to reality" aspects could operate under a completely different set of rules. Thus I choose the word "believable" when comparing fictional realism, as high believability is usually a good indicator about how well people can relate, and thus how good the fictional universe is. The Harry Potter series? Believable. Elves from the Eragon trilogy? Not believable. (the least of their kind can out-duel the best human swordsmen, not to mention they can completely screw you over with magic because they know every creature's "true name")
I guess it's mostly an academic point of view. Thing is, I don't take MapleStory seriously, but I do like intellectual discussion xD

I missed the part where maple isn't realistic but people want it to be, because their goal in life is to turn into a chibi sword wielding mushroom killing hero who wears a cape that improves their physical prowess.
This might hurt some eyes.
Don't forget to include money and crime in the story =P
