I only watched the Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya because I can't stand streaming anime, there's torrents for both on Tokyo Toshokan (thank god).
Anyway, it has been a really long time since I watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya but I did get most of the jokes (some did take more time to get than other thought >_>). Overall Haruhi-chan was okay.
