Owls on a per-item basis are only worth it if you buy expensive items. They're useless to the average player.
As for your comment on "less realistic" you can go ahead and stop using your magic spells too if that makes the game more fun for you. Seriously that's the most inane excuse I've seen for the FM so far. It's wrong in so many ways that I'm not even going to tackle it.
