I'm actually leaning towards it being more random than logic based. I can't say my memory is all that great, but I do recall that I just submitted the same recipe over and over again on Tespia until I got 3 stars + medal, and it worked out fine. My reasoning was, why bother varying it if I trust this is the correct solution. But it could just be that my personal recipes were just exactly the same for the first four tiers, but I find that more unlikely. Though, I guess it's even more unlikely that so many people would see a correlation between stars and the "real" recipe if there wasn't.
Oh, I guess it'll become more obvious in the higher tiers where the probability for higher ranked dishes is much lower.
