If you can't rerelease it due to censorship laws without heavy editing, or if you do not have a competent team that is focused on portraying the original vision instead of inserting pomegranatety memes (and yes, I am aware some games use JP memes, direct TL is still best), don't buy the IP in the first place, it would be better to give people the kick in the pants to learn JP because nothing is getting localized than to let them continue to eat up the mediocrity of current localization. Nobody will listen to that rationalization because there is a lot of money in localizing games when you aren't paying anyone barely pomegranate to do any of the work and they grab random people off the street to do the VA work if there is any. Some easily recognizable companies have always been localizing games badly, and they have always been wrong for doing so.
i disagree about keeping it 100%, some jokes are literally untranslatable and not funny in english, like japanese word puns, which if you translated 1:1 would make no sense/fun. or some joke referencing some jap prime minister sex scandal, most people would have zero idea about what it's talking about, change it to clinton and suddenly the joke is back with the same exact message.
that's what a good localization does, keeps the context, intact, but saves the message.
