As far as I'm aware, you also lose out on any advancements you choose not to go for.
So, for example, as a Wizard, your first advancement can be either Wizard 2, Cryomancer, or Pyromancer. If you decide to go Wizard 2, you're permanently locked out of both Cryomancer and Pyromancer. If you go Cryomancer, you can't go Pyromancer, and vice versa.
It's a very unique system. That being said, I kinda wish there were a circle reset system in some way. I can see entire characters being shunned based on choices that seemed good at the time, or nerfs to a class making it unwanted, thus making your character useless and all that time wasted. I'm not a big fan of the "break out Excel and every single resource there is about the game and spend 20 hours deciding on what you do before you actually play the game even a tiny bit" meta.
