People could always be swayed by fancy talk. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans knew it. I'm sure the Founding Fathers knew it too. But they considered it still better than disqualifying people a priori.
Which makes the conditions they did put in very telling: The Founding Fathers trusted the people to not elect a traitor, but they didn't trust them to not elect a foreigner.
