DONALD TRUMP [should be] DISQUALIFIED

You have clearcut examples of how terrible our society is, and you want to help spread it to other planets? There are currently only 2 routes our society can go down unless major (read:impossible) changes are made to every facet of civilization down to our basic human nature, one is we go extinct on this planet, and the other is we assimilate and systematically destroy as much of space as we possibly can before we are culled into extinction by every other race in the universe once they notice how pineappleing terrible we are. Right now, I doubt they can see us given our infinitesimal universal footprint, and that's the only saving grace we have. I mean, at best, we might make for decent forced labor, I guess, but nobody is going to greet us with open arms, either an imperialistic society will overtake us or a peaceful society will take one look at our culture and tell us to beat it, then kill us when we mistakenly assume they are weak and attack them for their technology.

It's not nearly that simple. The first few hundred years of (non-earth) colonization will sure as hell not allow any "normal" or "average" person on the mission.
My statement about space exploration was made in the most general sense possible. If, as a human species, we want to survive for <insert very large amount of time here>, there is no other choice than to expand beyond our solar system. The sun will die eventually and this solar system will be uninhabitable. Granted, it's a very long ways away, but we have to be headed in that direction as a bare minimum if we don't want to go extinct. Why not start now?
Intelligent alien life is an entirely different can of worms with way too many variables (some of which we don't even know) to properly assess. I would gladly have a discussion about it elsewhere, though.

That's all implying we don't nuke ourselves to extinction before then. Which is more likely than you'd think. I also wouldn't be surprised if a radical terror group was able to obtain/build their own nuclear weapon and use it in our lifetime.
But there's also nothing stopping some maniac gunning me down the next time I step outside (I think Eos said something similar to this a few years back?). Those events are out of my control so I try not to worry about them.



Anyways. For now, humanity's main priority should be climate change (and, consequently, a revamp of our energy systems). Bernie is the only one that could make progress on that.
