A deleted scene from the movie which will be part of the "ULTIMATE CUT" once the blu ray releases has come online.

The scene looks to confirm that Lex Luthor Jr. is indeed a minion of the big bad Darkseid, and explains his anti-meta human and vigilante goals.
Also, the reason they united is beyond "My mother had the same name as yours", but I guess people interpreted it differently.
