Huh. I guess I'll have to read the books afterall. I originally didn't want to spoil/prejudice myself with the new movie. I'm still not sure what level of cannon new EU material will have. I'm going to be very annoyed if they constantly retcon it after I read. It seems incredibly naive to believe they can just create a war free Republic without defeating the Empire remnants.
Good point about Rey, but it doesn't quite fit. Rey explicitly talks about the water world and island. She's been there before as a child. It also appeared to me that Luke recognizes her. How and why Ren is left on Jakuu is certainly intriguing.
My friends disagreed about the duel as well so I'll have to concede the point as personal opinion. It's not that I disliked it per se, but I think it could have been more spectacular.
I just did some poking around /r/starwars and there are some interesting theories about Snokes being Darth Plagues. I don't buy it. I didn't even think he looked human, but I suppose Palpatine didn't really either in ESB. JJ went really out of his way to distance FA material from the PT and OT worlds and characters, excepting the big 3 obviously. I do think there's something fishy (pun intended) about him. I wonder if he's even actually a Sith or dark side user at all. They explicitly don't use Darth titles. Yes Snokes says Ben needs to complete his training, but I don't think he explicitly said he would do the teaching. Even if he did, I wonder if he could be crippled somehow and unable to use his powers but still able to teach.

Disney just wanted to give free reign to the filmmakers by rectonning it. The new ones go quite a bit into detail for the path set by TFA.
About Snoke, my personal theory is that he is an original Sith, from the Sith species that the fallen Jedi took over millenia ago. Could certainly make it all the more interesting. Darth Plageuis wasn't human at all as well. He was of the Banking Clan species.
