Pretty much what SuperNerd said. He is definitely possible if you solo with two palicoes, but because everything in this game does a metric fuckload of damage, I don't recommend it. I've soloed a Chaotic Gore Magala a few different times, and I can promise you, I'll never do it again. Even though I had two palicoes, he repeatedly targeted me multiple times in a row, which resulted in two carts before I finally beat it. That was with 815 defense, by the way. Trust me when I say it is MUCH less of a headache to farm Contrary Scales with a group of four. Doing it alone isn't worth the trouble. Spending 12-15 minutes soloing him while taking it up the ass is hardly fun. The quest can be finished sub 6-7 minutes with a good team of four.
But do not let anyone tell you Contrary Scales do not appear in the box. That is a lie. 4 out of the 5 total Contrary Scales I've received came from the rewards box after. They also have a higher drop rate if you push a Chaotic Gore guild quest over 136. Initially, he starts off as a regular Gore Magala. I cannot remember the level he changes to Chaotic, but I know it's somewhere in 12x. If you're hurting for Contrary Scales like I was, search Gathering Hall's for 126+ GQs.
