protecting the npc during the boss fight was also really easy using my outlaw. I just took off my equips except for my gun and kept them stunned the entire fight and since i removed my equips, my damage sucked and I ended up killing the first one just before the boss died. Im pretty sure only two monsters can spawn up top, but not 100% as I have only done the pq twice.
