The ending itself is a clear indication that it's possible, although intentionally left open-ended. I don't really see there having been any points to do such a thing to "gather viewers" either, considering none of this really started until Season 4, at most the VERY end of Season 3, at which point they already knew that Nick was fu'cking them over royally. They knew at that point that viewers weren't going to do the series any good. If anything, they did it because they wanted to.
