It took me 5 minutes to even land a single hit, changing up my attack every time. Sure, they're easy to cheese if you can get them off stage, but when they get knocked into the air, they're most likely to spam air dodges. If you fight them on the ground, they have insane shield speeds, roll dodge every grab, they shield grab every close ranged attack, and reflect or dodge any kind of projectiles you use.
This is actually the first game where I've lost so many games to a CPU. It's almost demoralizing and would be if it weren't for the fact that it's so ridiculous. I also seem to notice a significant difference between the NA version and the JP version of the CPUs' AI. The Japanese one seems indefinitely smarter and quicker on the draw. I don't know if it's 100% true, but I played 10 matches against a level 9 CPU on my NA copy of the game and destroyed them all without losing more than a single stock in a five-stock game. I switched back to the Japanese copy of the game and I start getting my ass kicked up and down the block, barely winning with 1 stock left and sometimes even losing.
The CPUs have AI depending on how you play against them. I assume you've played your Japanese copy longer than your NA one so your CPUs probably have a very noticeable variation in difficulty. Constantly rolling, shielding, grabbing, charging smashes, etc. are some of the few things the CPUs can learn to pick up on. CPUs can be annoying to go against for most players who don't know the match-up well, and they're especially more annoying in this iteration due to their frame-perfect counter spamming. The best way you can try to improve would to just learn how to string combos together so they are helpless in hitstun. Giving them time to punish you by charging obvious smash attacks at high percentages won't do you any good most of the time, you have to kill them more creatively, taking advantage of your character's strengths (ex. Ness's bthrow), or locking them in hitstun from a series of combos.
Also, I remember training my CPUs back in Brawl to be absolute monsters so that I could have somewhat of a challenge offline. I'm so going to be doing the same on the WiiU version. (I acknowledge that Amiibos do it better)
