Also, to my knowledge, it works like this:
Doctor Mario -> Plays like Melee mario
Dark Pit -> Plays like Brawl Pit
Both have been revised fairly heavily since their previous installment(s), pit moreso than mario. It kinda makes sense to make a clone of them to keep their previous playstyles alive.
Dark Pit doesn't play like brawl Pit, he has the same moves as smash4 Pit, although I heard he has a different final smash.
