I think the difference could be this:
MapleStory: Maps have ids, and are loaded separately and uniquely at different times upon server startup.
I think what Dystopiq and others are trying to convey in their open world definition is that maps are all connected, and are loaded basically at once when the server starts. In this open world definition, the maps are not separate or identified uniquely like in MapleStory, since the World Map is basically just one map. rather than separately as in MapleStory.
The MapleStory Map.wz depends heavily on the mapid of the map, rather than just setting a certain area with coded x/y coordinate positions on the world map to determine a new area.
