There wouldn't be much of a point if the doctor could protect who is going to get lynched. Everyone knows who is going to get lynched since we can see the votes, its a different matter trying to protect someone from the mafia (as the doctor can't see the votes and has to predict well).

But why would you not bother using you powers to protect someone that you knew would likely get killed, instead of trying to lay a trap like this (which really didn't work out for anyone but the mafia at this point)?
