I don't think anyone (or at least I) is saying they're coming back for sure, just that they are very likely to. Big difference.
I also wouldn't base whether or not someone is coming back purely based on competitive observation. Replacements? Movesets? Uniqueness??? We had three Star Fox characters with similar moves and the exact same Final Smash in Brawl. Part of the game isn't just about competitiveness but also about just having fun by playing with your favorite characters.
But I'd rather not get into a whole "WE TOLD YOU SO" thing when it comes out. This is all speculation, after all.
