Definitely new ability.
Option a: A ton more defense stats due to how it's described, giving something like sableye with prankster a ton of defenses would be downright stupid/broken.
Option b: New ability that helps making it defensive/Justifies giving it a lot more defenses.
One of those two sound reasonable, the other doesn't.
