There's plenty of reason to think it'll taper off. And it will, just like it did after every other game release, which resulted in a blip in sales and then back to very small numbers again. Admittedly MK might even last a few weeks before the blip ends, but it's going to happen because they have no other major releases until smash.
The argument isn't that it's a bad console at all (other than it being vastly underpowered and overpriced for what it is), because it does have a good numebr of good exclsuives.
But a good console doesn't equal a console that sells well, and the wii u just can't become the second thing at this point.
If Nintendo gets an absolute miracle, it might reach gamecube numbers (I obviously don't think it will), and to put it in Iwatas own words from the launch of the wii "If Wii Doesn't Outsell GameCube, We've Failed", hence they've failed with wii U
