I suppose they could have stuck more water in, to make the ocean path along the bottom a little less straight, but it would have achieved nothing and if/when you play it again, you'll be glad they didn't, I'm sure.

Eh, Kanto and Johto had their excuses because they were just Gameboy games.
Actually, the Johto one is cheating a bit because it doesn't show the Ruins of Alph.
