Also, what's the big deal with the wipe? It's just an Alpha, hell, even if it was a Beta test I wouldn't be surprised or annoyed by it.
I guess some people don't want all the time they spent in Alpha to technically go to waste.
And not going to dance around the issue. This game IS rather time consuming. The last sets of levels to the level cap for each character is a pretty big test of patience. Expect to take around 6-8 hours per level once you get to levels 63+. Your best bets is to rely on EXP events and those EXP potions to level as fast as possible, and even then it's still going to take a while. After playing Diablo 3, I can't really imagine the idea of being able to make 10+ characters all over again in DFO and expect to still have a life so I can experience them all. Basically if you only plan to play 1-5 characters to level 70 (80/85 whenever they raise the level cap) you'll have a good time. If you have a severe case of altitis and expect to make 5-10+ characters and bring the all to level 70+ and gear them for end-game, you're going to have a bad time.
It's a Catch-22 in a sense, since some classes don't really come online until the really late levels, and some are incredibly powerful at the early levels but really begin to show problems later on, or some classes go from decent/okay to breaking the game with some end-game gear.
