It happens with Tokens as well. I've noticed that opening Lost Treasures causes it to happen.
And yes, while it may seem like a visual glitch, the game actually registers as you having either 0 Tokens or Gold until you relog. I had the misfortune of dying in a King's Road dungeon and the game said I had no tokens left.
