Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire announced
Lozmaster Wrote:I don't see why anyone would choose /now/ to boycott nintendo.
They don't let you play anything other than a white character in animal crossing (unless you temporarily burn yourself by staying in the sun for hours...) and I can't remember anyone having a problem with fire emblem: awakenings lack of homosexual relationships, so...

That, and miis are virtually genderless anyway, as all hairstyles/faces/blahblahblah are accessible to both genders, so if you want miss marrying other miis that are quite clearly of the same gender (despite what the gender menu option says), you can always go for it.
I think boycotting is a stupid idea and would never work. But I think at least making Nintendo aware of how offensive it seemed will prevent them doing this in the future.

The difference between a game like Tomadachi and a game like Fire Emblem is that the character you create is supposed to represent you and your interests. For a gay person playing that game, they are not able to play as themselves, to play all aspects of the game they would have to masquerade as a straight person. In games like Fire Emblem, the characters are written in certain ways. They are preset, you don't play the game and project yourself on those characters like you do in a life-sim game.

In their disastrous response, they said that they didn't include it to avoid making a "social commentary", but not including the option to be gay IS making a social commentary . No matter how it was intended, it looks bad. Other life-sim games have had gay relationships for AGES, like Sims.

Like you said, you can dress up and pretend, but that doesn't change the fact it should have been included in the first place. and should people have to pretend? why can't they be themselves?

It's not really "offensive", just short sighted and very stupid of them to do something like this. I hope that this issue will help Nintendo to be more aware of stuff like this.

Anyway *cough*, this was kind of off-topic.

EDIT: Also, to put it another way: Imagine you are a straight person (or don't, if you are one), and imagine you really want to play this game. However, all the relationships in the game are gay relationships, there is no way for you to have a relationship with a character of the opposite gender. I'd imagine a lot of people would be angry if that was the case. So it's not too hard to see why the gay community is angry about this in a world which is becoming more equal all the time.

EDIT: but hey, see, complaining does work Nintendo deserves a lot of respect for learning from their mistake.
