Yes, the trait boost potion is completely random, so you could get a trait you already maxed - and it will go to waste.
I have five maxed traits, so my chances of getting the last one (Insight) are slim. But I must claim the box on my main, it's my only char on this account that's collecting all those coins, or has real use for the 2x coupons.
