So I'm way late to this thread, but it's getting near anniversary time and I thought I'd dust off the old account and see what's what.
I played Maplestory due to a few reasons. It started out because I liked the graphics, it could run on my subpar laptop, and I had a lot of free time during the summer. It was a heavy grind to do things, and I was dirt poor in game. I still am dirt poor btw. I did spend some money from time to time, but I never got addicted to gaching or nx clothes. I did use the auction house pretty frequently when that came out though. Saved me from having to buy NX for a while. Anyway, unlike most MWLBers, I think I was rather unique in the sense that I had a relatively small buddy list. I hardly ever interacted with guilds or the fm, and generally limited my interactions with other players to pqs, with an occasional friend addition. I introduced my girlfriend to the game when she wondered what I was spending so much time on. I can't say that Maplestory ever was my one and only game, but for a time it certainly held my attention and continued to do so fairly well. After the initial Summer multiple hour grindfests, I never really reached that level of addiction. I still enjoyed playing it, but I never tried that hard to get to the next level. In fact I just jumped around making new class after new class. I took breaks, especially during hacking sprees and boring events. However, when I heard about the MWLB, I thought to myself, why not try to help out? I like this game and I think I can help make a difference. It turned out things were rather poorly run, but I still tried to do what I could. Eventually life interfered with my ability to devote time to MS and to being and MWLB. I still played occasionally, but I did very little patrolling, and eventually the program itself was halted. I found out later it had semi rebooted, but I was done with. I had spent a long time and at least some effort trying to make the program a success, but things didn't work out. I can't say I blame Nexon for it, it was a grand idea that never reached it's full potential. I still think a lot of the employees at Nexon did want what was best for their game, I just don't think they ever had the resources or time to do so.
So to get back to the point; why did I play Maplestory? Because I kept having fun with it. I still enjoy coming back for a new class and playing for a week or two, sometimes almost a month. Some events still get me to participate. I never liked the hacker outbreaks, and some of the choices Nexon has made were terrible, but at it's core, I was able to have some fun for years in a free to play game. And that to me says it all. Maplestory, while it has it's flaws, was able to give a lot of people some fun time and good memories. Perhaps for many that is no longer the case, but it was for me. And to some extent, still is that way for me.
