Marriage is a religious institution that has also been treated as a legal one because, up until modern times, religion was law.
If we've truly outgrown such silly superstitions, then why do we need to adhere to silly institutions of marriage?

oh wait I've got a perfect anecdote here. Okay so your employee just loves walking into heated kilns. Now, this has absolutely nothing to do with his job, and he just does it as a sort of hobby. Just recently a law has been passed that requires that you to cover part of the cost of his fire proximity suit and its maintenance so he doesn't get burned for engaging in entirely avoidable risky behavior.
I digress that is the other half of the coin, however this did happen, not sure if the website skewed either way but that was the bottom line.
