It depends on your lane and how well you farm... and if you get kills. If I get first blood or some kills I'd rather rush Linken's or even Treads than Aquila but it's a great item if you're just farming creeps. Also, heroes that go for Linken's usually rush it because it's what allows them to farm safely until they get their core items. Boots or upgraded boots > Linken's > Core item. Note that Eblade isn't even core if you don't get it at a decent time or depending on what heroes you're going against; if you can't get it 'early' or there are too many tanky heroes I'd rather skip it and go for Manta>Butterfly/Skadi> Heart/Satanic or damage item... and just go for some splitpush action.
Skill build I'd leave Adaptive Strike last, ulti at 9 and 10 so that you can max Waveform and Morph right away, which make your farming easy and safe.
Related to your post right above, hard carries like Morphling, Medusa, Antimage, Spectre and the likes depend, partly, on how well you farm. They need a lot of farm time and gold to actually carry so you need to get a decent early game and a lot of room in the midgame... and it's your responsibility to find or make room yourself to find it. Most important item is a tp so that you can get to any lane you can get farm on safely; if you get caught and you die it's time and gold you won't spend farming.
I think that carries like Lifestealer, even Luna and Gyro that just need a BKB to be useful during midgame teamfights, are much much easier to play because they can actually join teamfights and do lots of damage without that many items. Their early game is also nice and there's a lot of potential for early kills. Playing carry is all about farming and decision making; knowing when to go for a solo kill, when to dive, when to join a teamfight and when to hide in jungle safely farming neutral creeps. The second part is the hardest one.
