Alright First: That is not the gedo statue, that is the technique Hashirama used against Madara in their fight.
That is not Madara wearing Tobi's mask, that is the "special" white Zetsu that allowed Obito to wear it like clothing. It is the one controlling that appears to be controlling the technique.
The scenario came out of no-where, but it will probably be explained later.
