Aren't the two big colossi the same person, just one is corrupted? Why do you have to go through crimsonheart to fight him? What is the story behind that?

I think both Colossi are the protectors of their respective areas, the Colossus in Leafre started to become corrupted by Damien, the Colossus in Dawnveil was successfully corrupted by Hilla and thus had to be stopped.

Crimsonheart is simply the entry point into Tyrenum, you free the Demons from being imprisoned in Crimsonheart, and they move back into Tyrenum and thus starts the Gollux questline.
