The two of us did end up beating the boss on the first try. He wasn't as difficult as people made him out to be but we could've used some better ranged weapons other than the iron hunting bow and randomly getting lucky on connected my sword.
A couple tips for future encounters:
1. Bandages are cheap and easy like Dark Link said.
2. Silver armor works nice. I feel the recipes are a bit cheap compared to the weaker Scavenger armor.
3. Prepare a small arena. One flat platform for the ground of whatever material you need and another platform in the air made of wood platforms so you can reach him with your melee weapons better.(would've saved me some time)
