A couple of times I've encountered when you try and use the portal after defeating the boss and you don't move on, but you get exp and coins regardless. You can talk to Oda and then use the portal again to get the next rooms reward. this can on about 3 or 4 times.
On one hand, it allows you to skip some battles, but you also lose some coins that you would have got as drops.
Also ouch, all these bosses hit like a truck.
