Wii U Discussion: Super Mario 3D World out in all the places (that matter!)
Lozmaster Wrote:The first two levels of world 4 are difficult and bullpomegranate for all the wrong reasons. (So probably "Why did I buy this game, this is a total let down"). I won't write it off just yet, as the last few worlds might be better, but I hear bad things about Silent forest too, so I'm not hopeful anymore.

4-1, you have to follow a specific route otherwise you get stuck looping around infinitely. This wouldn't be so bad but it's full of long sections where you can't interact with sonic at all. Some of them are 15+seconds long, and there are multiple repeats of them very close together. I watched my recording and at one point you literally have 10 seconds of control of sonic for a compulsory 50 second long section to get through the level. There is another 30 second long section of this that you will probably have to do more than once because you have to do a ridiculous bit of parkour that requires you jumping around a corner and then back on to the wall from the side you just came from. (I think you may be able to do it with a laser wisp as there is a laser wisp crystal right there, but I hit it multiple times and it ended up in forcing me back to an earlier section multiple times).

Whoever thought those non interactive sections was a good idea shouldn't be allowed to be involved in sonic game developement ever again.

And not only that, it's the first ice world, so sonic now controls like pomegranate, with any semblance of control of your jumps removed when you try jumping while on ice (Rather than a normal spin jump, he twirls like he thinks he's a ballerina, which seems to prevent you from using your double jump or homing attacks).

4-2 sticks sonic inside a giant snowball, kinda like super monkey ball but you have two options: Too slow, but some semblance of control(at some points, this actually gets you killed because you can't jump far enough to get across a gap), or too fast and if you're going in even the slightly wrong direction, that's it, instant death, because you can't stop or steer in any significant way.
Oh, also if you even touch an enemy you're probably dead.
I haven't actually cleared this stage yet because I was fed up with the game after trying to do 4-1 and 4-2 in a row.

I just cannot fathom what they were thinking. They've lost any goodwill they had from me now from the good, not great, first 3 worlds anyway.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love difficult platformers, Super Meat Boy is my second most played game on steam, and the perfect run on Mario Galaxy 2 was amazing, but the difference between those two and this is they played perfectly. Lost world feels like the game is pineappleing me over for no fault of my own.

I now really hope the 3rd game in the Nintendo exclusive trilogy of sonic games is going to be Sonic Generations 2 or Colours 2 rather than like lost world.

4-2 wasn't so bad to me. And yes bumping into those Abominable Snowbabies will bounce you off the stage, lol.

This game is weird for me. I'm enjoying the charm- the music, graphics, the environments...but then on the other hand I hate the pacing. Why am I forced to fight 3 or 4 giant centipede bots that take several hits to kill? Why do I have to guide this slow moving piece of fruit to a blender? And the bosses are more ridiculous than the NSMB bosses. I think I took out one guy in 2 hits. No challenge at all.

And yeah, it certainly fails at being a precision platformer...not that the genesis games were much better, but in those games I felt the characters had a much better sense of control and momentum, something Sega has not been able to achieve in their modern games for god knows why.
