Roy is literally only known because of Smash Bros. No-one would care about him otherwise. It's quite telling, that despite his good reception in melee, they still didn't bother localising Roys game ever. The next game did eventually make it over, but he wasn't in it. (Or if he was, it was only a very small postgame scene).
No doubt Roy and Marth being in smash bros did play a large part in making the series came west though. But weren't they originally going to be removed from the western versions until they were liked at focus testing? I seem to remember reading that somewhere and can't remember where.
