I don't completely hate the potential system. Honestly, part of what does make Maple Story fun is how many ways an item can be upgraded. If you look at old Maple Story (and a lot of newer games), all you could do to enhance an item was one thing- scrolling. Back in the day, once you'd scrolled your weapon, hat, overall, shoes, gloves, and cape, you were pretty much done unless you were shooting for a better scrolling job.
With potential, there's so much more room to upgrade. Okay, the power creep portion could have been toned down a little, given that boosts from a well-cubed legendary item are ridiculous, but at the same time, now I have a few equip slots worth putting good scrolls to AND like 10+ equip slots to work the potential of. Except...GMS doesn't let free players earn cubes in any way. Well, I suppose the occults are out now, but that's not nearly good enough to allow players to join the more competitive ranks. I much prefer when cubes have like, a 0.2% chance to drop from any monster kill, allowing players to slowly accumulate them over time, or even just go farm monsters of a nice spawn rate to try and get more.
