Would someone mind explaining their hype/anticipation for this game?
The above is not intended as a rhetorical or sarcastic question; I'm genuinely curious.
In the broadest sense, I know why people play Maplestory.
Whether you're among those who still somehow enjoy playing or in the larger camp of those who play only due to an investment fallacy (some would call you masochists, but some should review a certain quote from Princess Bride), there's a reason you play.
What I want to know is what aspects of the original game you assume/hope will be in the sequel that generates your fervor. Because, with a new game, any sunken costs in the first are irrelevant. It's your chance to break free.
So what is it that is worthy of the exclamation marks and caps lock?
It's certainly not the mechanics.
The AP system was never verbose, but all merit to it has since been removed. The SP system leads to utterly no variance between one of class x and another of class x. With few exceptions, potions can be used without delay, leaving little reason to play defensively, amplifying the focus on one character aspect. Could it be that you like that individual levels are meaningless?
Play style is clearly out the window. (Thankfully), so is looking to a conclusion to the unwieldy storyline. That doesn't leave us with much else that's unique to Maplestory.
There's just so little to the current game that isn't poorly thought-out, half-assed in implementation, aping another MMO, or all of the above.
Personally, the reason I am excited to see more about this sequel is it represents a second chance to not screw the pooch.
In an ironic, yet happy, twist, the FAQ Nexon has released seems to indicate a desire to distance the upcoming game as much as possible from its predecessor in all but art style and tone.
So maybe, at least for a little while, we'll see another game that isn't afraid to be weird, doesn't feel the need to hand-hold, and isn't afraid to let its players have fun.
I'm also quite excited to hear it is a prequel because, let's be honest: The Black Mage was the worst thing to ever happen to Maplestory.
