Apparently chain fishing increases the chance of catching a shiny pokemon.

I can confirm this. Just caught a shiny Horsea with this method.

First chain got to about 20 before breaking, second about 10, on my third I caught the Horsea on my 5th or 6th use.

EDIT: just got a shiny Clauncher too.
