Okay, so those random things found on raised platforms in the background? They have a purpose. You can use certain moves to harvest items from those objects. Confirmed so far:

Berries from a Berry Tree using Air Cutter
Rocks from a rather phallic gray rock using Surf

Yet to be tested by me:
Power Herb possibly from grass using Razor Leaf
