Now that was a game..
Maplestory was pretty, had nice music and.. yea, but Dfo basically had that + beating people up real time + no money sink to get strong. You could buy some good avatar sets that gave additional stats with real money, but for one you could also buy them in auction house (expensive), or you could buy cheaper ones that make you look nice which will make you feel good at the same time (those also give stats too), then just upgrade your weapon and armor normally like everyone can. It's not like killing monsters by looking in their general direction is all that in a beat em' up anyway. If you played for long enough, you could make enough to try and get some of the rare avatars with in game money.
Basically, playing dfo felt rewarding basically in every level range because damage was pretty accessible, and even if you were weak, combo'ing baddies with multiple weak hits isn't boring either. If you're hilariously weak (hao), parties are there for you. I feel like the only thing that kept me on maple were the nostalgic graphics and music. Starting a new pirate/cygnus knight and hearing that music again never gets old.

I disagree at the no money sink to get strong. You aren't super weak with little money because you can get a +10 weapon okay, but the the gap between godly geared people and poor people was just as bad as in Maple. The moment you got power hungry in that game it was easy for that greed to consume you. The worse part was Kiri. I threw over 1/2 a billion gold at her and the best I got was a +13 weapon. I broke countless weapons, and cleared the entire market of weapons to get that +13 because past +10 a failure breaks that weapon. There's no limit to how godly you can get, and it all boiled down to hoping the Random Number God smiled upon you. Saw a video of a level 70 Magic Exorcist in Korea who had a level 40~50 weapon that was +17 because he was insanely lucky. Because it was +17, he tore through the toughest Outerverse dungeon by himself in minutes. The right way of getting stronger shouldn't be determined by how lucky you are at gambling your items for power. Should be guaranteed but requires a reasonable amount of effort/time.
Imagine if in LoL you can get an Ultra Trinity Force that will make any carry one shot everyone else in that game (even tanks) because it's that powerful, but you need to upgrade the regular Trinity Force to a Super, and then to an Ultra. There's only a 25% chance you can upgrade from a regular Trinity Force to a Super Trinity Force, and then you only have a 10% chance to upgrade to an Ultra Trinity Force. And each time, there's a chance the Trinity Force will be destroyed. Yeah, getting stronger in DFO was like that. People have poured billions of gold into Kiri for power, but ultimately in the end they were gambling their gear away.
Better comparison, it's like using Enhancement Scrolls on your gear, but DFO style. Kiri was Enhancement Scrolls personified, except the power boost got higher and higher.
...... oh my god.
Kiri's Machine was Maplestory's Enhancement Scroll system except it used money to fuel it; DFO merely borrowed the idea and made it their own. DAMN YOU MAPLE!
