With Big Bang and cash item events private server activity dropped immensely.

It wasn't the cash item events that killed it. The problem was that Nexon was actively attacking anyone involved with creating a private server, and Big Bang was a major overhaul that required some serious time and effort to implement. Plus, players got tired of starting from scratch when their favorite server shut down thanks to a lawsuit. I've poured crazy hours into servers that don't exist anymore, so I get that.

But some private servers are still going strong. And the more pay2win Nexon makes their game and then doesn't beef up its customer service to show that they expect you to drop cash on their product, the more disgruntled players will leave and find better places to play Maple Story.
