It seems to me that you're reaching for straws to grasp because you're in a bad situation that resulted form a bad turn of luck. You're trying to shift blame and responsibility for those actions to another party. This is immature.

Yeah, you're right. No one has to play. And each passing day more people choose to stop. Populations have dropped so much we've had to merge eleven servers into three. "You don't have to play" isn't the proper response to this. Every player is valuable in a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG.
"You don't have to pay" isn't right either. Even if the profligate "whales" spent enough to completely offset all the lost revenue from players that would otherwise have spent small amounts of money, it would still be a better situation for an equivalent distribution of many small-spenders and almost no "whales".
