Not really sure where all the hatred for it is coming from. There isn't any man on man action that people were crying about.. literally just a slice of life that revolves around a swim club.
One of the reasons some of the hatred is the whole tumblr thing where tumblr thinks they are the reason the anime was made, which left a lot of people disliking it before it was even made.
Some of the hatred is because a lot of male fans of anime hate stuff that's fujoshi pandering, regardless of most big shows having some sort of fujoshi fandom (Shingeki no Kyojin has a huge fujoshi following for example)
Most people don't care, I for example accepted that the anime wasn't anything for me and just ignored it for the most part.
The people who are hate it are just very loud about it, a vocal minority i'd say. I could be wrong but that's how i've observed the entire thing.
