You pay a monthly fee to play, as long as that guarantees there wont be any in-game advantages in exchange of money. Or maybe something like Guild wars 2, you gotta pay a fee for every patch/expansion they release, on the same condition.
If by Freemium you mean something like "League of Legends" business model, I believe thats what the Cash shop was supposed to be, but Nexon's goal of constantly increasing income turned it into what we know today, and gave birth to all the other shet like Gachapon, marvel machine, potential, etc.
