What was the point of these map edits?

The map edits were part of KMS's storyline; on the homepage they stated:
빅토리아 아일랜드에 닥친 거대한 지진! 혹시 앞으로 일어날 변화를 예고하는 것은 아닐까?
Basically, "Great earthquake at Victoria Island! Can it be a sign of oncoming change?"

The change itself was intended so that users could get all the major quest items w/o going to sleepywood, and to bring people deserted maps.
