I should also respond to harem, the fact that most harem use very generic character types with a semi generic and predictable story gets a bit tiring after a bunch of them. generally, the better harem-like shows focus less on the harem, but more on the character depth because of possibly using a very unusual character in the bunch(generally the MC). For instance, the much praised Monogatari series(e.g Bake, Nise, Kuro, Neko) is praised for its odd and unique minimalist art style, as well as an MC that isnt as totally generic as all of the other harem MC's(the MC is more openly expresive about his feelings to others, but of course there is a limiter to himself he checks of) compared to a generic MC lead whose generally undecisive, gets in ridiculously lucky situations, fails to pick any girl at the end and much more. In general, RomCom is more preferable than Harem(some romcoms have harem' like feeling to them without the overly expressive females in the heat after the MC explicitly.)

Araragi is horny, gets into ridiculously lucky situations because of his "shadow", and has some generic values. But he's unique due to the sole fact that he is a character executed differently than others. His hornyness is that of a teen, who has sexual tension out the ass, and has a background story that is really only explained in the Light Novels.
