I chose kennen because of his aoe ult mainly and my old mid was wukong, I chose kennen because I thought he could do a lot more damage than wukong since I can go for more damage as compared to wukong who needs to be tanky.
This is what I find kennen was good for:
good consistent stuns due to short cd spells
harass melee champs to no end, very good at zoning out melees
decent ult for a teamstun
the problem I have with kennen are:
no real burst, he is good at poking down opponents and keeping them stunned
no reliable way to gap close except flash, e simply doesn't do the job all that well
getting into the middle of their team would likely get you killed, you often have to end up ulting/zhonyas early and most likely hit tanks most of the time
basically have to rush zhonyas to do your job
your ult is actually very easy to walk out of considering the random effect. It's actually hard to survive+stun+do full dmg of a good ult.
Basically he isn't a great initiator like wukong, his aoe damage isn't all that powerful even if you compare it to tanky wukong. His distruption is delayed compared to immediate knockup from wukong. Like I can see him fitting into a aoe teamcomp with like a amumu/malph/etc who can disrupt first so you can get into a good position to ult. But if you have them locked down like that why not just go katarina if you need damage, why not just go for wukong if you need cc?
