Are people really like that? I've only ever played with friends (well, to be fair, only with like 2 people ever) and we always take our time with pre-Hard Mode. In fact, Hard Mode is never an option until we've done everything in Normal. It's more fun that way to me. Rushing to Hard Mode to me is just asking for a headache.
