Wait, does monster level actually have any effect on success rate when combining?

Tried to figure that out with my S-rank bovines... sorta uncertain results (all combinations are S + S rank bovine):
level 3: 5 A+, 5 C
level 6: 1 S, 6 A+, 3 C
level 9: 8 A+, 2 C
level 12: 1 S, 9 A+
level 16: 1 S, 10 A+, 6 C

My intuitive sense is that this is not strong evidence that level matters, so much as just doing a lot of combinations. And the chance of getting an SS is low enough that 57 combinations (plus 16 more of 'special' pairs) didn't result in a single one. The chance of getting an S is pretty low, too; 4 out of 61 (did 4 more combinations at intermediate levels).
