The difference between game and watch and Wii Fit trainer is G&W wasn't being used as the frontrunner to get people hyped for the game, being that he was the very last character you unlock. Compare it to brawl- On announcement day, we got Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Metaknight, Pit and Snake. All of which are fairly "core" characters from nintendos history. Melee had Peach, Zelda/Shiek, Bowser, Ice Climbers, shown on the announcement trailer.
How you can think either of those two lists is comparable to Megaman, AC villager and Wii fit girl blows my mind. Hell, wii fit girl wasn't even in the initial trailer. Thank god they were able to get megaman or it would have been a complete waste of time. Yes, my opinion was probably a bit tainted by the fact that the direct was one bad announcement after another, ending in the weakest smash bros announcement we've ever had since people cared (Because the original wasn't really hyped at all). But that's nintendos fault too.
Quote:There have been characters before who weren't exactly wanted but does that really make them bad choices? It's like sakurai said, there are a lot of interesting things these characters can do that others cannot. You can't force an iconic character into a specific character model just because they're iconic and therefore need to be in the game.
Are you kidding? Sakurai complete makes up movesets for tons of the characters that have no major relation to their own game skills. All the starfox characters are tangentially related at best, I would love to see the scenes of Zelda/Shiek doing anything like their brawl/melee movesets in a zelda game, Captain Falcon/Ganondorf speak for themselves, Zero Suit Samus didn't really play anything like her melee/brawl interpretation in Zero Mission or the brief section in Other M (barring a stunner), Wario didn't even take his iconic tackle from the Wario Land games, let alone his other moves, and of course (Brawl) Pit. They all essentially had most if not all of their movesets made up from his imagination, or at best based on other characters in the games skills and not their own.
And what does "force an iconic character into a specific character model" even mean? I didn't suggest he should have put his wii fit trainers moves on... Shulk or someone, the entire development time on wii fit trainer was an absolute waste that they could have spent on someone better.
Quote: If smash is to be a truly balanced game it needs to incorporate things we haven't seen in smash before so that every character type can be competitively viable and to that end we should be open minded about characters and wait for more information.
If you think smash bros or any fighter for that matter can be "truly balanced", I'm not sure how to even begin to explain how unlikely that is. For crying out loud, he used mario kart of all things as an example of a well balanced game.
