Not true. There were much less complaints, in fact most of them were based on how unpolished it looked but it ended up looking real good when they fixed the readability. The difference is that this UI's template is bad while Big Bang's wasn't.

The template is only bad because it's unpolished. It looks like a UI that hasn't been streamlined yet and hasn't gone through polishing, especially with the white space. There's plenty of small changes they can do to make this better, like remove the extra white space and such. Outside of the status bar, most of the complaints are either it's ugly, or there's too much white space. White space is an issue they can easily fix, and ugly is the same exact complaints people made about the BB UI.

I remember all kinds of, "This is the worst UI ever," and "It's really ugly, go back," for the BB UI, which are half of the complaints here. The only complaints I agree with are the ones about the HP/MP bar, but otherwise it's the same stuff repeated.
